Becoming an Effective Community Capacity Adviser

Supporting community organisations requires more than good intentions — it takes the right skills, understanding, and approach to create lasting impact. This BASE 360 online workshop focused on developing effective Community Capacity Advisers, equipping participants with the tools and confidence to support small, racial minority-led organisations in a meaningful and culturally responsive way.

The session began by exploring the role of a capacity building adviser. Participants reflected on what it means to support organisations beyond surface-level advice — focusing on long-term growth, sustainability, and empowerment. Effective advisers act as partners, helping organisations unlock their strengths while navigating challenges.

A key theme throughout the workshop was building trust-based relationships. Strong relationships are the foundation of effective support, especially when working with grassroots and underrepresented communities. Participants learned how to approach organisations with empathy, respect, and cultural awareness, creating safe spaces for honest conversations and collaboration.

The workshop also focused on identifying strengths, gaps, and development needs. Rather than taking a deficit-based approach, participants were encouraged to recognise existing assets within organisations and build on them. This strengths-based mindset helps organisations grow with confidence while addressing areas for improvement in a supportive way.

Practical guidance was provided on core areas such as governance, funding readiness, and leadership development. Participants explored how to offer clear, actionable advice that helps organisations become more structured, resilient, and prepared for funding opportunities.

Navigating structural barriers was another important part of the session. Many racial minority-led organisations face systemic challenges, including limited access to funding, networks, and resources. The workshop equipped participants with the awareness and sensitivity needed to support organisations in overcoming these barriers while advocating for more equitable systems.

Empowerment was at the heart of the session. Rather than creating dependency, effective capacity building enables organisations to take ownership of their development, make informed decisions, and increase their long-term impact.

Through practical frameworks and real-world approaches, participants gained tools they could apply immediately in their work. The interactive nature of the session allowed for shared learning, reflection, and the exchange of experiences across different community contexts.

By the end of the workshop, participants felt more confident in their ability to deliver high-quality, equitable capacity building support. They left better equipped to strengthen organisations, support community growth, and contribute to more sustainable and impactful local ecosystems.

This session is part of the BASE 360 programme — a free series of expert-led workshops designed to build the skills, knowledge, and confidence of VCSE organisations and those who support them.
