Understand how councils work, find real opportunities and position your organisation to win contracts.
How to Get Money from Your Local Council
Winning funding or contracts from local councils can feel complex and competitive, especially for VCSE organisations navigating unfamiliar systems. This practical BASE 360 online workshop was designed to simplify the process, offering clear insights and actionable strategies to help organisations understand how councils buy services and where real opportunities exist.
The session began by breaking down how local councils operate. Participants explored the difference between commissioning and procurement — a key distinction that shapes how services are designed, funded, and delivered. Understanding this difference helps organisations position themselves more effectively and engage with the right opportunities.
A strong focus was placed on how councils make decisions. Beyond price, councils look for organisations that demonstrate impact, reliability, community understanding, and the ability to deliver outcomes. The workshop highlighted how VCSE organisations can showcase their strengths and align their work with council priorities.
Participants also explored where genuine opportunities exist. Rather than chasing every available contract, the session encouraged organisations to focus on areas where they can add the most value. Identifying the right opportunities and building relationships with commissioners were highlighted as critical steps for long-term success.
Positioning your organisation as a strong delivery partner was another key theme. This includes demonstrating credibility, building partnerships, and clearly communicating your impact. The workshop emphasised the importance of being proactive — engaging early, understanding local needs, and making your organisation visible within the local ecosystem.
The session provided practical steps to improve readiness for future bids. From strengthening internal systems to developing clear messaging and evidence, participants gained tools to become more competitive in an increasingly challenging funding environment.
Importantly, the workshop addressed the specific barriers faced by racial minority-led organisations when engaging with council processes. These challenges can include limited access to networks, lack of clarity around systems, and structural inequalities. The session offered guidance and strategies to help organisations navigate these barriers with greater confidence.
By the end of the workshop, participants had a clearer understanding of the local council landscape, how to engage with commissioners, and what steps to take next. They left feeling more prepared, more confident, and better equipped to compete for — and win — contracts.
This session forms part of the BASE 360 programme, a free series of expert-led workshops designed to support VCSE organisations to sustain, grow, and thrive.
