Strengthen leadership, build partnerships and prepare your organisation for future change.
Developing Leadership for a Changing VCSE Sector
Strong leadership is essential for organisations navigating today’s rapidly changing voluntary and community sector. The BASE 360 Leadership workshop brought together VCSE leaders to explore practical strategies, future challenges, and collaborative approaches to building resilient organisations.
The session began by exploring leadership in context. Participants reflected on the current state of the sector, including funding pressures, increasing demand for services, and the need for stronger collaboration. Leadership today requires adaptability, confidence, and the ability to work across partnerships to achieve meaningful change.
Core leadership characteristics were discussed throughout the workshop. Effective leaders were encouraged to think strategically, communicate clearly, and take ownership of their organisation’s narrative. Leadership is not just about management; it is about vision, influence, and building relationships that create long-term impact.
Participants examined contemporary challenges facing the VCSE sector and the importance of preparing for future change. Organisational reviews, business planning, governance structures, and succession planning were highlighted as essential steps for sustainability and growth. Leaders were encouraged to assess their systems, identify gaps, and plan proactively for the future.
Collaboration emerged as a key theme. Partnership working, shared resources, joint funding bids, and co-designed services can help organisations achieve more with limited resources. Working collectively strengthens community voice, improves outcomes, and increases access to funding opportunities.
The workshop also explored working with businesses and external partners. Corporate social responsibility initiatives, university partnerships, and cross-sector collaboration can provide access to resources, expertise, and funding. Building strategic relationships allows organisations to align their work with broader social and economic goals.
A strong focus was placed on systems thinking — people, place, and partnerships. Leaders were encouraged to be proactive: connect with the right people, understand stakeholder motivations, and position their organisations as equal partners in decision-making spaces. Building evidence, promoting impact, and taking collective action were highlighted as critical leadership responsibilities.
Participants left the workshop with renewed confidence, practical tools, and a clearer vision for strengthening leadership within their organisations and communities.
